Sauter and her colleagues brought the basic emotion method to the Himba using vocal sounds (laughs, grunts, snorts, sighs, etc.) instead of photos of posed faces.

Sauter's experiment is now described in the text of How Emotions are Made, chapter 3.

Sauter and colleagues tested posed vocalizations for the following emotion categories: Amusement, Disgust, Surprised, Fear, Sadness, Anger, Relief, Achievement (a.k.a., Pride), and Pleasure.
